Emergency Contraceptive Pill (Morning After Pill) at Vautier Pharmacy
The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP), also known as the morning after pill, is available at Vautier Pharmacy without an appointment if you believe you may be at risk of pregnancy.
The ECP works best when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, and it can be taken within 72 hours (3 days).
If you are unsure whether the morning after pill is right for you, simply visit the pharmacy and speak with one of our pharmacists for confidential advice.
To supply the Emergency Contraceptive Pill, our pharmacist will carry out a private consultation. This includes:
Reviewing your relevant medical history
Assessing your body mass index (BMI)
Ensuring you understand the information and advice provided
Confirming that the medication is safe and appropriate for you
BMI is important because a higher body mass index may reduce the effectiveness of the morning after pill.
The ECP must be supplied directly to the woman requesting it, as the pharmacist needs to complete the consultation and ensure informed consent.
Age Requirements: You do not need to be 16 years or older to obtain the Emergency Contraceptive Pill. However, the pharmacist must ensure that you are able to give informed consent and understand the advice provided.
Free ECP for Eligible Patients
Our local health funding (DHB) covers the cost of the Emergency Contraceptive Pill, meaning it is free for eligible New Zealand residents after consultation if it is deemed appropriate.
